Warehousing done right eradicates the limits of corporate analysis. What is the benefit of warehousing this activity rather than just reporting results? What are those limits?

TIME. Certain analysis may not be available for up to 15 days after data processing systems close, which can be up to 30 days after a financial event (receipt, order, etc.) occurs.

AVAILABILITY. The analyst’s report is available only to those who commissioned it, or who know of and request it. Somewhere another analyst is doing something similar but just a little different. Lack of availability fosters inconsistency and duplication of effort.

DETAIL. The corporate analyst holds underlying detail. Any data consumer who needs further detail must go to the analyst.

With warehousing, the final report is ready when the source data is ready – not after 60 hours of gathering, verifying, cleaning up, re-keying, and manipulating that data. The same set of numbers is published, a click away from the underlying detail, in a secure corporate database structure accessible on desktops across the enterprise. And the analyst becomes an important part of the team that gets it done.

You cannot achieve this level of effectiveness by merely compiling and publishing data.

Making that data informative is the real key to good warehousing: knowing how data will be used and accommodating that use fully… foreseeing potential shifts in business and planning for it… understanding what is intuitive to the analyst and building a warehouse that is easy to navigate.
