Sarbanes-Oxley requires that principal executives now certify that reported data is a product of good internal control. Controls within and surrounding information systems must be demonstrably effective in ensuring that information is free of material misstatement… because your reporting systems WILL be audited.

It is important to treat information delivery with the respect required for the important decisions riding on it – management decisions, investment decisions. Reporting is no longer just an add-on to a data warehouse or data processing system.

At the top levels of the corporation, there are huge amounts of data concentrated in singular decisions. At the functional levels – say, customer service - there is a lesser volume of data involving a single customer, but it’s lost among the millions of bytes of customer data collected daily.
